The HDMI standards organisation have come up with the latest specification V1.3. What does this offer users over previous standards and what do you need to do to benefit from it?
V1.3 Features
- Colour depth increased from 24 bits to 48 bits
- Bandwidth up from 4.95 GB/sec to 10.2 GB/Sec
- New mini HDMI connector that is more suited to smaller mobile devices
- Refresh rates of up to 120Hz
- New features to solve lip sync
- New lossless audio formats supporting Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio®
But how relevant is this to me now?
Today it's likely that none of your components support V1.3 so it may be of no benefit to you as of today.
When you buy any new components it is reasonable that you will only buy ones that support V1.3. But by the time your entire system supports V1.3 and you stand to get some benefits we bet there will be a new standard that makes V1.3 look inferior. V1.3b is already on the cards.
So our advice is these new standards are great news but dont get too cariied away with trying to implement them in your system unless you have an infinite budget and are willing to regularly throw away your system
